As someone who’s worked in the business and sales field for over twenty years, I’ve seen and analyzed quite a few marketing trends. And as any good marketer knows, in order to be successful, we need to be in tune with what the target demographic wants, how they’re buying, what the going rate is for certain products, and a number of other factors affecting the sales.
Here are the top two current trends in marketing & sales:
Online Sales (E-Commerce)
To say the internet has changed the way we do business is an understatement: culturally, we’ve undergone a MASSIVE revolution in how we buy and sell products and services. With the explosion of the digital age, people are buying almost everything online. Amazon sales are out the roof, and they don’t own a single brick and mortar store. We’ve seen a huge spike in remote education, as more and more people want to get earn degrees from home. Lately, we’ve even seen grocery stores jump on this trend; WalMart, Macey’s, Smith’s, and others offer pick-up programs where you place your order online, an employee rounds up your food, and then all you have to do is pick it up.
The current leader in e-commerce is Amazon, whose North American sales increased 25.2% last year, whereas WalMart’s overall U.S. sales increased just 3.3% through the first three quarters of the year.
E-commerce is not only good news for buyers, it’s good for sellers, too! Overhead costs are eliminated (or greatly reduced), we can be more efficient in how we reach our potential consumers (through methods like email lists and target marketing campaigns), and we have the ability to do business all over the world. Gone are the days of Uncle Rico-type salesmen going door-to-door to sell: internet shopping is here to stay.
Wellness Products & Services
Another hot trend right now is an interest in all things wellness. “Wellness” is an umbrella term that can relate to fitness, nutrition, emotional health, cleaning supplies, and anything deemed “natural.” Consumers these days care about quality products to use on their bodies and in their homes. Whether it’s essential oils, exercise coaching, green-friendly products, or protein shakes for weight-loss, we all want to look and feel healthy while also being environmentally-friendly.
The good news is that there is still a lot of potential in this space for social entrepreneurs wanting to become involved in marketing and selling these types of products. The key to gaining market share and becoming the leader in this space will be delivering healthier products and solutions at competitive prices shipped to consumers’ doors.
One of the biggest announcements made this year was Amazon’s move to purchase Whole Foods for $13.7 Billion. This is a strong indication that the trend of wellness is merging with the trend of e-commerce to become the normal way consumers will buy solutions to their health needs. People want healthy, safer, more natural products, and they want the convenience that online purchasing provided..
